About Dithering
Dithering is a technique to simulate grayscale using only black and white pixels. By scattering dots in patterns, your eye perceives shades that aren't actually there.
Dither Types
- Floyd-Steinberg: Error diffusion for smooth gradients. Best for photographs.
- Ordered: Regular dot patterns. Classic retro computer look.
- Atkinson: Apple's classic dither from early Macs. High contrast, distinctive.
- Threshold: Simple cutoff. No dithering. Stark black/white.
Use Cases
- Reduce page weight for low-bandwidth users
- Create retro-aesthetic artwork
- Generate high-contrast printable images
- Prepare images for e-ink displays
